VIC: Don Chipp launches new research foundation

MELBOURNE, Aug 17 AAP - The Australian Democrats today launched a new research foundationnamed after its founder, Don Chipp.

The Don Chipp Foundation has been established to conduct studies and inspire publicdebate on environmental, social, cultural and economic issues in Australia today.

Funded by the federal government and public donation, the body will be politicallyindependent and run by a board compiled of both Democrat members and non-members.

"For once in my life I can't find the words... I feel very honoured to be going downin perpetuity," said 77-year-old Mr Chipp at the launch at Melbourne's Swinburne University.

"Particularly the permanence of such an honour. This foundation is going to look at avariety of very important issues."

The launch was followed by the first activity of the foundation, a seminar on issuesaffecting children and youth.

"People tend to have to be dead before people say something nice about them, so it'sgreat we actually have a living legend rather than someone from the history books," saidAustralian Democrats leader Senator Andrew Bartlett.

The Australian Democrats was formed in 1977 to provide a third political option toAustralian voters.
