Fed: Sugar sweetener shows FTA problems, Latham says

Labor leader MARK LATHAM says a $440 million rescue package for canegrowers doesn't
compensate the sugar industry for being left out of the free trade deal with America.

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD today announced the package in the sugar town of Bundaberg,
in south-east Queensland.

Mr LATHAM says the Senate inquiry examining the free trade agreement will have to look
at the sugar package as well.

He says canegrowers have been dudded because sugar should've been part of the agreement
with the United States.
