WASHINGTON Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney headed homeThursday with what he called "modest encouragement" that the UnitedStates will consider his requests for action to reduce acid rain.
Mulroney cited a statement during a private lunch with PresidentReagan, at the end of two days of meetings, in which Reagan said hewas directing Secretary of State George P. Shultz to "take the issueup as a matter of priority" with Canadian Foreign Minister Joe Clark.
Whether that will lead to a change of position in U.S. attitudetoward the Canadian goal of controlling the problem is questionable.
